Lick mats, slow feeders and treat cups: what each one is for

Spreading yogurt and pumpkin into the grooves of a blue West Paw Feast Mat

A lick mat is a textured surface for spreading soft food; a slow feeder has grooves or ridges that spread kibble out; a treat cup holds a filling you can freeze. All three turn a quick snack or meal into a longer activity. The right one depends on what your pet eats and how you like to serve it.

Which one fits which food?

You want to serve… Pick Example from the shop
Peanut butter, yogurt, wet food, purées Lick mat SodaPup Flower Power eMat: small (about 4 × 4 in) or large (about 8 × 8 in)
Dry kibble or a full meal Slow feeder SodaPup Mandala eTray: about 8 in across, 0.6 in deep, holds 1 cup
Both, on different days Two-sided mat West Paw Bubbles Feast Mat or Waves Feast Mat: one grooved side, one lick-mat side; holds 2 cups
A frozen filling that lasts Treat cup SodaPup Honey Pot eCup: XL, 4 in tall, holds 12 oz

How do you use a lick mat?

  1. Spread a thin layer of soft food into the texture. Thin layers last longer than thick ones.
  2. For a longer session, put the filled mat in the freezer first. SodaPup lists the eMat and eTray as freezer-safe. For other mats, check the product page before freezing.
  3. Stay nearby. A lick mat is for licking, not chewing. Take it away if your pet starts to chew it.

What about cats?

Small lick mats work for cats too. SodaPup suggests the small Flower Power eMat for cats and puppies. Use a cat-safe spread, such as wet cat food.

Is a shallow slow feeder different from a deep one?

Yes. A shallow tray like the Mandala eTray (0.6 in deep) keeps food close to the surface, so it's easy to reach. Deeper grooves, like the slow-feeder side of a West Paw Feast Mat, ask a little more work for each bite.

How do you clean them?

Quick checklist

  • Soft food → lick mat. Kibble → slow feeder. Both → Feast Mat.
  • Thin layer, frozen for longer sessions
  • Supervise, and take it away if it's being chewed
  • Rinse after use; top rack in the dishwasher
